Introduction

The original hardwood forest was cut down in 1975 and monospecific plots were planted with different species: oak, beech, spruce, Douglas fir, Laricio pine, Nordmann fir. The objective of the Breuil system is to study the effect of species substitution on the biogeochemical and biological functioning of the ecosystem. The observations are intended to highlight changes in soil levels and to conclude on the possible consequences for the different soil and ecosystem functions. The plots are heavily instrumented for long-term monitoring of water flows and major elements between the different compartments of the ecosystem (lysimeters at different depths, rainwater collectors and trunk rustle, humidity and temperature probes, etc.).
