2nd CIRED International Summer School in Economic modelling of Environment, Energy and Climate
"The human part of the mitigation challenge: the role of demand and lifestyles in low carbon pathways"
2-6 July, 2018 – CIRED, Paris, France

The International Research Center on Environment and Development (CIRED) is pleased to announce the second edition of its International Summer School in Economic modelling of Environment, Energy and Climate. The Summer school will take place from July 2nd to July 6th at CIRED headquarters, Paris. The theme for the second edition is "The role of demand and lifestyles in low carbon pathways".

The assessment literature on climate change mitigation has to date mainly explored technologies and supply-side measures. However, the need for rapid transition towards low carbon societies underlies the importance of demand-side solutions to reduce GHG emissions. Demand-side solutions are generally more complex to address and relate to a variety of intertwined topics including demand-side mitigation measures in buildings, transport and agriculture sectors, the role of human behaviors, the role of social and lifestyle changes, etc. Integrating demand-side solutions and issues into overarching assessments of low carbon pathways thus remains a critical and needed challenge for modelling studies to inform better policies and decisions.
The aim of the Summer School is to foster scientific exchanges between participants and faculty members about these issues and the relevant applied modelling methods to address the different dimensions of the topic, including energy models, IAMs, CGE models.
The morning lectures given by the School’s faculty members will provide the background scientific material covering several topics such as the role of demand in existing low carbon scenarios, modelling demand-side solutions in end-use sectors with energy-economy and integrated models, modelling behavioral and lifestyle changes, etc.
Participants will be asked to present a version of their research work and will receive feedback from fellow students and faculty members. The complete program includes a group project exercise, reading sessions, conferences and a social program.
The faculty will be composed of CIRED researchers and several international leaders in energy, CGE, integrated assessment modelling and climate policy.
Application and scholarships
The Summer School is aimed at advanced graduates (PhD and master) and post-doctoral students in environmental and energy economics and modelling.
The School Organizers make available a limited number of scholarships for the coverage of the travel costs for participation in the School.
